The Detroit Public Library invites you to attend a reception and preview of The Eye Site Exhibit from the National Eye Institute:

The exhibit provides information on low vision and features five kiosks with an interactive multimedia touchscreen program, a display of assistive devices, and a list of local low vision resources. Low vision affects millions of Americans. Defined as a visual impairment not correctable by regular eyeglasses, contact lenses, medicine, or surgery, low vision interferes with a person's ability to perform everyday activities.

The exhibit provides a wealth of information about low vision and will help people determine if they or someone they know may have low vision.

A light buffet will be served along with presentations and self-guided tours. RSVP to 313 833-4042.

2008 Salary and Benefits Survey

Yesterday the 2008 Salary and Benefits Survey forms were mailed to those MDMLG members who manage hospital libraries in the Metro Detroit area. As in the past, the survey solicits information on professional and para-professional positions in hospital libraries.

Only 28 survey forms were sent out this year as the number of MDMLG-affiliated hospital libraries has decreased (30 forms were sent in 2006 & 36 forms in 2004). More than ever, full participation is vital to the success of the survey. Past needs assessment data have shown that our survey results assist managers in getting needed salary adjustments for themselves and staff.

Please return your completed forms to the Henry Ford Sladen Library by June 30. Thank you in advance for your participation!

AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT

It is with great pleasure I announce this year's recipient of the MDMLG Annual Scholarship Award.

The MDMLG Student Award is presented to a student enrolled in the Library Information Science Program at Wayne State University who displays an interest in health sciences and/or are enrolled in the LISP Health Science Program.

This award encourages students to consider the health sciences courses offered at WSU and provides a full, one year membership to MDMLG, including subscription to the newsletter and an invitation to the yearly banquet, an award certificate, the recipient's name on a plaque displayed in the LISP department, and a monetary award.

The award will be presented at Wayne State University in May.

MLA Webcast - Web 2.0 Principles and Best Practices

MDMLG was planning on sponsoring the MLA Webcast last week entitled "Web 2.0 Principles and Best Practices: Discovering the Participatory Web" at Wayne State University. However, due to the inclement weather, Wayne State was closed.

MLA has provided us with 30 days of "on demand" viewing to those organizations who broadcast the webcast. In addition, you can download and print a PDF copy of the Participant's Manual.

Proposed Bylaws Changes

The MDMLG Executive Board will be proposing changes to the association's bylaws. All members should have received or soon will be receiving a mailing regarding this.

In general, the proposed changes consist of:

1. Nominating Committee changes needed to fit in with new schedule of fewer Board and General Business meetings,
2. Language in the Auditor article to more accurately reflect our procedures, and
3. Miscellaneous changes to resolve inconsistencies in the bylaws.

I highly recommend that everyone try to attend the upcoming meeting. No special quorum is needed to amend the constitution and bylaws, only the 30% quorum needed to transact business, but everyone’s input and vote is valuable.

Measuring Your Impact - Continuing Education Opportunity in Traverse City

Warren Buffet said, “Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.” But, it can be frustrating demonstrating or explaining the value of library services to administrators, trustees or other stakeholders. We know we provide valuable services, but what methods are available for evaluating outcomes and values?

The Western Michigan Health Sciences Libraries Association of MHSLA will sponsor a library evaluation workshop in Traverse City at the Traverse Area District Library on June 12, 2008 from 10 am to 5 pm. Workshop instructors will be Ruth Holst, Associate Director of the NNLM/GMR and Jacqueline Leskovec, Outreach and Evaluation Coordinator at the GMR.

Measuring your Impact: Using Evaluation for Library Advocacy is an NNLM/GMR program and provided without charge. The WMHSLA will provide lunch. 6 MLA CE Credits will be awarded for attendees.

The outcome for the class is that librarians will be able to show the value of their library's services through evaluation methods. Participants will become familiar with an evaluation process and will use and take away methods and tools for assessment, evaluation planning, creating logic models, data collection, data analysis and reporting. The workshop will feature group exercises that move participants through the steps of an evaluation process. There will also be student discussion and exercises in addition to lecture.

I just created a new web page entitled MDMLG History. It contains the Executive Board and Committee rosters, as well as links to the Annual Reports and Goals & Objectives. Some of the information dates back as far as 1999-2000.

This will be particularly useful if you need to document your committee participation.

The Members-Only portion of the MDMLG web site now has a new password, effective today. Each of you should have received an email from me with this information included. Please email me (vreid1@sladen.hfhs.org) or call me at (313) 916-2550 if you did not receive the password message.

If you are an MDMLG member, but don't have your email address included in the Directory, you will receive the new password via snail mail.

If you are not an MDMLG member, it's not too late to send in your membership application so you can access the MDMLG Directory, Minutes, Treasurer's Report, etc. Once I receive confirmation that you have renewed, I'll send you the new members-only password.
