Committee Members:

Diana Balint (2003)
Diane Lebar (2003)

Accomplishments:

The professional development committee planned and implemented 3CE MDMLG-sponsored programs, 2 professional sharing Lunch ‘N Learn programs, as well as provided information on 3 non-MDMLG sponsored CE opportunities. Following are the highlights:

The updated 7 CE credit NLM Toxnet class was offered on December 10, 2002, at Shiffman Medical Library computer lab. 22 participants attended the free CE class. Shiffman Medical Library generously provided refreshments for break

MDMLG cosponsored a 4-hour MLA CE, with Swets Blackwell entitled Proving Your Worth: Professional, Business and Political Tools, on Thursday, April 3, at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn, with 25 participants attending. Michelynn McKnight, Director of the Health Sciences Library, Norman Regional Hospital, Norman, Oklahoma presented a very entertaining and valuable program. She offered entertaining experiences as well as guidance on using professional business, marketing and political skills to convince administrators, non-librarian decision makers, as well as clients of the value of the library and librarian’s essential services. Swets Blackwell, again, provided a delicious luncheon and interesting update of their information services. Participation fee was $35.00.

Twenty-two (22) participants attended a 4-hour CE OVID Training class, presented by Stephanie Fulton, offered on Thursday, April 10, at the Shiffman Medical Library at Wayne State University. The class included OVID database tips and tricks, use of administrative tools, and a review of the EBM databases. Shiffman generously provided the refreshments for break.

Two Lunch ‘N Learn sessions were held this year. The first at Children’s Hospital in September and the second at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Oakland in April. Both gave members the opportunity to discuss issues, ideas, suggestions we all find challenging to deal with. The networking opportunity was well attended at both sites.

Non-MDMLG sponsored CE opportunities included Grant Writing presented by Ruth Holst hosted by Mike Simmons @ Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, OVID Training Class presented by Stephanie Fulton (as described above) hosted by Ken Nelson @ St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, and PDA Fair hosted by Wayne State University Shiffman Library.

All these programs were accomplished with a cost to the organization of $400.00, offset by a profit of $875.00.

Informational Notes:

Ellen Marks and Sandra Martin have been very generous, again, in allowing us to use their excellent computer lab at no cost, as well as always being hospitable in providing refreshments for the breaks. Continue to keep this wonderful facility in mind as you plan future technology classes. The lab has 28 computers with excellent teacher accessories.

A big "Thank You" to Valerie Reid, who has, again, been invaluable in keeping the MDMLG web page updated with all the CE possibilities, plus all the related registration and directional information. This is a great avenue to utilize in promoting our activities.

Possible ideas for 2003-2004:

Swets Blackwell would again like to sponsor a program.
Stat REF maybe interested in supporting a CE class in the fall.
QuickDoc training/update sessions have been suggested.
Infotrac informational session for the support staff.
Yearly NLM update and intro classes.

Lunch ‘N Learn Ideas:

The changing reference services at Beaumont-RO
How we are all coping with continuous budgeting and cost cutting measures
What’s new and interesting in your library?
How institutions are handling Intra and Inter net websites.
"How did you handle that" type of discussions

Respectfully submitted,

Marilyn S. Kostrzewski, Chair
