Objectives:

  • Develop, organize, and implement one or more continuing education opportunities to the membership and interested nonmembers on relevant topics related to medical librarianship.
  • Coordinate efforts with the program committee in order to provide programs that are beneficial to the membership.
  • Prepare an annual report summarizing the committee's activities for 2006- 2007.
  • Notify membership of appropriate and timely professional development information, courses, and resources.
  • Prepare a projected budget and submit an expense report for the 2005-2006 fiscal year.
  • Submit relevant materials to the archives.

Accomplishments:

Three MLA approved continuing education opportunities were offered this year. The 8 hour spring CE, held on Tuesday April 3, 2007 , "Evidence-Based Library and Information Practice" was taught by Jonathan Eldredge of University of New Mexico . We were fortunate in having the support of both Proquest and Ebsco to offer this course. This course was advertised on the MDMLG, MHSLA, OHLA and SOHLIN listservs. In addition, notices of courses sponsored by other groups in the area were posted on the MDMLG listserv and blog.

The cost for the Spring CE course, healthy breakfast, and lunch was $30 for members and $95 for non-members. Thirty-eight attendees rated the content of the course and the speaker as positive overall.

Two Summer MLA approved CE courses are being offered on July 26, 2007 at Shiffman Medical Library. A three-hour approved course "Docline Explained" in the morning and a four-hour approved course "Keeping Up with NLM's PubMed" in the afternoon were taught by Charniel McDaniels and Holly Ann Burt Outreach and Exhibits Coordinator of the NN/LM-Greater Midwest Region.

We are offering each of these 2 courses for $20.00each for up to 30 registrants, which includes lunch. Shiffman Medical Library generously offered the use of both the computer lab and the Stapleton Room no cost. TheNN/NLM covered Holly Ann and Charniel's expenses and fees.

Notes:

Special thanks to Valerie Reid, for keeping the website up to date with the course offerings, registration postings and other information. Also thank you to Valerie and Alexia Estabrook for their assistance with posting professional development information on the blog this year. It has helped very much in promoting our activities.

The attendees rated our course offerings as positive this year. I'm pleased that we are able to offer low or no cost CE opportunities to MDMLG, especially as budgets tighten and more members cannot go to national conferences. Suggestions for future courses include advanced reference, leadership and statistics.

I am proud of our committee's accomplishments this year. Juliet Mullenmeister, Sandra Martin, Chris Hunt, Melanie Bednarski, Heidi Schroeder, and Annette Healy were enthusiastic, supportive, and fantastic to work with! I look forward to chairing next year and working with the committee in continuing to offer informative and relevant CE courses.

Respectfully submitted,

Toni Janik, Chair
